Geelong News

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, announced today that real-time travel information is now available on Geelong’s bus network, making it easier for passengers to plan their journey.

This means local Geelong passengers now have up-to-the-minute information about bus services in and around Geelong.

Previously, passengers only had access to timetable information so there was no way to tell if the bus would be late due to unexpected delays.

The new real-time information – available through the Next 5 feature on the PTV App and website – provides up-to-date information about when the bus will come.

Passengers in the Geelong area already have access to real-time train information on screens at Geelong station, and at five other stations on the Geelong line.

In 2015, stations at Geelong, North Geelong, North Shore, Corio, Lara and Little River had real-time screens installed as part of a $5.8 million investment to provide real-time information at 33 regional stations.

The introduction of real-time bus information follows the introduction of 18 extra train services to Geelong every week in January, on top of the 200 extra services introduced in June 2015 with the opening of Labor’s $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link.

For real-time Geelong bus information, visit ptv.vic.gov.au and click on the Next 5 section.

The new Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula bus network will deliver a major improvement to the bus network following consultation with the community in December 2014 and March 2015.

The opening of the Regional Rail Link on Sunday, 21 June 2015 is going to deliver many benefits for the region. To allow people to take full advantage of the new train services, a new bus network will also be implemented.

This means you will get:

  • Services every 20 minutes on many routes connecting people to key locations.
  • Expanded network coverage delivering bus services to people for the first time in new housing developments at Leopold (Estuary Estate), Drysdale (Curlewis Parks), Torquay North and to the Geelong Ring Rd Employment Zone.
  • Easier interchanges for people needing to use more than one route to get to their destination, all buses will operate via Moorabool St Interchange and Geelong Station making it easier for people to know where to go to access to other routes.
  • Better connections between buses and trains in peak travel directions.
  • Shorter journey times for locals and visitors from Torquay, Queenscliff and Ocean Grove who are heading into central Geelong from Marshall Station.
  • A new high frequency cross town service from Deakin University to North Shore Station via Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, Belmont High Street shops, Deakin University Waterfront, Geelong city centre, Geelong Station, Pakington Street shops and Corio Shopping Centre, plus it connects with high frequency train services at Geelong Station and provides a convenient, local interchange for northern suburbs residents at North Shore stations.
  • New cross-town connections for students at Deakin University and Gordon TAFE’s East Geelong campus and for those working in the Breakwater employment zone.

Geelong line services will begin using the new dedicated V/Line tracks through Wyndham Vale, Tarneit, Deer Park, Sunshine and Footscray into Southern Cross Station.

The completion of RRL means V/Line no longer has to share the tracks with metropolitan trains, avoiding congestion when travelling to and from Melbourne.

Geelong line customers will have access to more consistent and frequent train services. For more information, see regional train and coach services.

For Geelong residents travelling to the Werribee area, a new bus network is being introduced in Wyndham that will provide bus connections from the new Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations to many areas across Wyndham, including Werribee Station.

Customers travelling between Wyndham and Geelong can catch one of four bus routes to/from Wyndham Vale Station or one of six bus routes to/from Tarneit Station. High frequency services will operate on routes 150, 160, 170, 180 and 190 connecting the Geelong and Werribee lines. Route 190 (Werribee Station to Wyndham Vale Station) will meet every train at Wyndham Vale Station.

Community feedback outcome

As a result of community feedback during the December 2014 and March 2015 community periods, the following changes to the new Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula bus network will be made.

PTV would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide their feedback direct to PTV.

Changes to Geelong bus routes

Route 21 - North Shore (changed to new cross town Route 1)

Route 21 (the Geelong to North Shore route) will give bus customers improved access to Corio Village Shopping Centre and better connections with trains at North Shore Station. Following feedback from the community the route will provide a short loop east of the railway line around North Shore Station; something residents in that area were very keen on keeping.

Thanks to the improved services that RRL will deliver, customers on Route 21 are advised to go to North Shore Station for access into Geelong or Melbourne.

Route 24 - Newtown

PTV has listened to community feedback and we will keep the bus loop that goes through Newtown.

The good news for people living along this route wanting to connect to the train is that they can catch Route 24 to North Geelong Station, where the bus timetable has been designed to connect with the train timetable.

Route 25 - Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights

The community strongly advocated to PTV that getting to Pakington Street is a really important destination for many people from Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights.

Therefore PTV will alter bus Route 25 to run down Autumn Street to Pakington Street and then back onto the proposed new route into Geelong. This will mean that residents from Herne Hill and Hamlyn Heights will have easy access to Pakington Street and the shops on Shannon Avenue, which we know is important to the community.

Residents on Route 24 should transfer to bus Route 25 on Autumn Street to access Pakington Street and the shops on Shannon Avenue.

Route 32 - Leopold

The community advocated to PTV that they wanted bus Route 32 to extend further up Highland Way, so we are extending bus Route 32 to connect with bus Route 61 and extend bus services further into Drysdale. The bus service will be extended to the end of

Highland Way and across Christies Road, where it will then do a loop via Shortland Way, Hoddle Drive and Pollard Drive.

Route 40 - Belmont

Due to community feedback, PTV will alter Route 40 to service Francis Street in Belmont. Please note this bus service only runs on weekdays and people should access Route 41 on weekends from the Surf Coast Highway.

Route 42 - Belmont

Due to community feedback, PTV will alter Route 42 to operate along Glastonbury Drive and connect bus Route 42 with South Geelong Station.

Route 61 - Leopold

PTV will be changing new bus Route 61 to travel down Dorothy Street, past the shops and to Simons Street.

A large percentage of those who provided feedback told PTV that these shops are really important to the local community and that’s why we’ve altered the route.

PTV’s long term plan is to increase the frequency of bus services on weekends and expand the operating hours of bus services to later at night, as additional funding becomes available.
